Bagamoyo
Bagamoyo is considered the oldest town in East Africa. It is located 75km north of Dar es Salaam. It was founded towards the end of the 18th century, and was once the capital of German East Africa, as well as an important Arabs trading port.
Remains of German colonial buildings, as well as those of Arabs, are the main attractions in Bagamoyo. The Kaole Ruins, and the remains of the 13th c. Shirazi town are also another attraction.
The Holy Ghost Fathers established their first mission of Bagamoyo in 1868, and it was here that Dr. Livingstone's body was brought from the interior and kept before being shipped back to Europe following his death.
A trip to this fascinating historical town will be ideal if you are spending 2 or more days in Dar es Salaam.
